Shared COMMUNITY

Anchor text: Acts 2:42-47

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Ice Breaker: What’s your favorite TV sitcom?

We are not meant to live life alone. This is true from the Garden of Eden to the 12 disciples to the early church. Here in Acts 2 we are given a beautiful picture of how the early church lived life together in a shared community.

  • What descriptives stick out to you in our anchor text?

  • Do you think any of these are more important than the other or are they all equally important? Explain your answer.

Read 1 Corinthians 12:25-27 and Hebrews 10:24-25

  • As groups where church becomes family we should always care and encourage one another. Briefly share with the group a high point or low point in your life right now.

  • According to the above passages, what are some of the benefits in meeting together consistently?

  • If you are a newer group, what are some of your interests outside of church and work?

Fellowship // Greek: koinonia

A mutual partnership or participation found in common.

Deep Discipleship

While we share a partnership and participation in Christ we must ask: “What’s the point?” An authentic and vulnerable community of people will lead you into deep discipleship to glorify God more and more. We are going to learn how the early church was committed to learning and growing in Christ. The more time we spend together should secure us to the anchor of the gospel.

  • How would you describe a disciple in your own words?

  • Can you name an individual that has helped you grow closer to Christ? How so?

  • Read Ephesians 4:11-16. According to this passage, what are some ways we can attain unity in the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God? (v.13)

Pursuing Mission

The gospel is bigger than you. It’s bigger than your group and yes, it’s bigger than New Heights. We are called to advance the kingdom of God as disciples of Christ by making disciples.

  • How did the early church in Acts 2:42-47 pursue the gospel mission? Does it seem to radical or unattainable for the modern church today? Why or why not? What could it look like for your group?

  • As we know the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20 calls disciples to ‘make disciples of all nations’, but according to this text how does that happen?

  • How can your group make the gospel of Jesus available to outsiders AND help believers grow within?

We are all outsiders apart from Christ, yet he brought us close to share what he has done with those inside and outside the church. Pursuing Mission can look a lot of different ways, but always remember the mission is to make Jesus known in every part of our lives for those close and far away. Soon you may see those that were far off draw near by the grace of God.
