Membership

Covenant

Membership is a covenant between an individual and the local church. While membership is not explicitly mentioned in scripture, it is implied. Throughout the book of Acts, it is clear that numerical records were kept. Elections were held to put leaders in place (Acts 6:1-6), records were kept so the church would know specific needs of members (i.e. widows in 1 Tim. 5:9-12), and the numerous teachings about church discipline imply church membership. Being a member of a local church is a good and holy covenant.

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.” -Hebrews 13:17
